How About A Friendly Competition?

A co-worker came up to me the other day, wrapped her arms around me, and asked if I wanted to take part in a “Biggest Loser” contest.  Although I despise getting weighed, I reluctantly agreed.   Actually I've lost a few pounds since May so this will inadvertently help reacquaint me with some healthy habits.  So here’s the deal, it’s a $20 buy in and we get weighed weekly.  If we gain, we put in $5.  If we drop out, we put in $10.  The pot is starting off at about $400 already.  We're doing this for 11 weeks, conveniently ending right before Thanksgiving.  The winner is the person who loses the highest percentage of weight (based on where they started).

Although it would be great to win the money right before the holidays, I think the true point of this competition is self-improvement.  This reminds me of Wayne Dyer saying, “you don't need to be better than anyone else, you just need to be better than you used to be.”  How true is that?  How many times to we waste our energy comparing ourselves to others when what we need to do is improve on and support ourselves to become better?

For a fun way to get healthy, maybe you can try one of these contests with some special people in your life.  Whether you “win” or not, remember the most important goal within – to be better than you were yesterday.
